The 1980s helped shape the world as we know it today in many ways, and that includes cars. From the top-selling Ford Escort to the very first Porsche 911, the decade’s influence can still be seen today.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk II
One of the coolest hatchbacks ever forged, the Golf GTI handled like a go-kart, was built to last and most importantly made driving fun. Its formula has been copied ever since proving how great a car it was.
The world’s first car with an All Wheel Drive system that actually worked (hence its name) the Quattro went down in history because of that. It also had a mean engine and could reach a fizzing 143mph, which wasn’t bad back in the day.
Toyota W10 MR2
A powerful engine, light body and looks that scream ‘1980s sports car!’ the Toyota W10 MR2 had it all. Its removable roof panels added the rock star vibe to a car which was actually reliable and excellent for cruising around in.
Produced in the mid 1970s the Lamborghini Countach rose to fame in the 80s thanks to its low body, pointed bonnet and doors that rose upwards fitting in with the style at the time. It still looks magnificent today, though not as futuristic as it once did.
Ford Mustang SVO
Released in 1983 Ford’s line of Special Vehicle Operations applied race derived technology to production cars. A mighty engine and classic appearance, as well as the fact only 9,000 models received the SVO badge, made it a much sought after vehicle.
